Welcome to the official website of
Coombs Wood Cricket Club

Coombs Wood Cricket Club was founded in 1921 as a working team for Stewarts & Lloyds steel works, which was later purchased by British Steel.

The club was based on Gorsty Hill in Halesowen until the ground was sold by the landlords and the club re-located to our current home on Stewarts Road, Halesowen with the site being owned by Coombs Wood Sports & Social Club.

The cricket club is an accredited ECB Clubmark club and prides itself on traditional cricket values.

The cricket club has a healthy playing membership – fielding three league teams on Saturday: 1st XI in Division 2 of the Worcestershire League, 2nd XI in Division 5 and the 3rd XI in Division 8 (North).  On a Sunday we play in the Arden Sunday League.

The club has a vibrant youth section with some 75 youngsters (boys and girls) in membership of its coaching scheme for ages from 5 to 15. They are encouraged to join the squad training sessions, and represent the club at age groups ranging from under-8 festivals to under-14. This is an important part of the club, and youth registration details can be found on the website.

We also have a women's softball team which is going from strength to strength with members training and playing games on a weekly basis. In 2025, the team will play in a Worcestershire Performance League, Development League and at festivals.

All parents and family members are also encouraged to join the club and help support the club in any way they can.

We welcome any player at any level who has moved to the area due to work, studies or relocation and we guarantee that you will be made to feel comfortable and welcome. We particularly want to attract / speak to players who have played at a high level or ex-professionals who have retired and want to give something back.

In partnership with the social and bowls sections, there are plans for a vast expansion both on and off the field.  Our plans in relation to the cricket section include:

  • Club house / bar extension

  • Additional changing rooms

  • Establishing a hard ball women's team

  • 4th cricket team on a Saturday and 2nd team on a Sunday

  • Cricket garage relocation

  • Bowling machine for the outdoor nets

  • Purchasing additional land for second onsite cricket pitch

  • Indoor cricket centre

We are aware that some of these plans are challenging but not impossible. We welcome new members to help move these projects forward and continue with the growth of the club
